Regarding the Government’s decision to close primary, secondary and higher education institutions in regards to coronavirus, the Czech Social Security Administration informs about the claim that parents can benefit from if they stay at home with the child under 10 years.
What are the conditions for entitlement to nursing benefit?
- The parent (or another caregiver) must be a sickness insurance employee.
- A child who cannot attend the school facility is under 10 years of age.
- If the child is cared for by someone other than his or her parent (eg grandmother), the condition is that he or she lives with the child in the common household.
How long can the nursing benefit be received?
The maximum length of receiving the nursing benefit is 9 days. The exception is when the parent is a single parent. In that case, the parent can extend receiving the nursing benefit for up to 16 days.
Parents or other authorized persons may alternate in the care within the 9 (or 16) calendar days.
What is the amount of nursing benefit?
The amount of nursing benefit starting from the first calendar day is 60% of the reduced daily assessment base per calendar day.
How to qualify for the nursing benefit?
The nursing benefit in the case of care for a child under 10 years of age due to the closure of a childcare or school facility is claimed by filing a Request for the nursing benefit for child up to 10 years of age due to closure of educational facility/school (“Žádost o ošetřovné při péči o dítě do 10 let z důvodu uzavření výchovného zařízení/školy“), which will be issued in 2 copies by the educational institution (school) that the child visits. The second copy of the form is for the case the parents take turns in their care; otherwise, one copy is sufficient. The employee shall complete part B of the form and forward it immediately to his employer, who will then submit it to the relevant Czech Social Security Administration office.
The benefit is paid by the Czech Social Security Administration (applicable according to the registered office of the employer or its accounting office) within 1 month at the latest following the day on which the duly completed supporting documents were received.
What is the next course of action after receiving the nursing benefit?
When caring for a child because of the described closure of the school facilities, even after the expiry of the first 9 (respectively 16) calendar days, the nursing benefit is no longer due, but the parent can still request their provision of leave with the reason of an excused absence from work (“Omluvená nepřítomnost v práci”).
Where does the school obtain an application form?

Will a self-employed person also qualify?
A self-employed person is not entitled to the nursing benefit even if he or she a sickness insurance payer.
What happens when more children are taken care of at home because of quarantine?
In this case, the nursing benefit can only be paid for the first 9 days (it does not matter which child the application will be for the nursing benefit). After nine days there is still an excused absence from work, but the nursing benefit is no longer due.
