Current information on coronavirus Covid-19
Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as MERS and SARS. A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.
How to protect yourself?
- Wash your hands frequently
- Maintain social distancing (at least 1-metre distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing)
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
- Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze
- Stay informed and follow the advice given by your healthcare provider

If returning from affected countries
Keep an eye on yourself for any symptoms of COVID-19. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty in breathing in the 14 days following your return, seek medical care early and share your recent travel history with the health care provider.
Do not visit your local doctor or GP but call instead. Stay at home if you begin to feel unwell, even with mild symptoms such as headache and slight runny nose, until you recover. Avoiding contact with others and visits to medical facilities will allow these facilities to operate more effectively and help protect you and others from possible COVID-19 and other viruses.
